Tim Meakins
Signal The Moment I Disconnect
Signal The Moment I Disconnect explores the intersection of technology and human connection to the natural world. The exhibition navigates this concept through reimagined symbols of nature and humanity, while challenging viewers with the contrasting use of materials and fabrication methods that signal the presence of technology. These works serve as figurative stepping stones, encouraging audiences to reflect on their personal relationship with the world around them. As an artist working primarily with digital tools, Meakins explores the implications of creating within virtual spaces. The reliance on these technologies raises questions about the nature of art-making and the growing detachment from tactile, handson processes. This disconnection from traditional methods of creation serves as a reflection of a broader loss of intimacy with the natural world—one that continues to evolve as technology reshapes how we interact with our environment. However, the artist engages with these digital tools in a physical and interactive way within the studio, utilizing VR programs to draw objects, 2D and 3D modeling on a computer, and prototyping through 3D printing at home. The transition from process to
process highlights the efficiency of working with technology, while simultaneously illustrating the self-contained and disconnected nature it fosters. Collaborating with local fabricators, the artist completes the process through Aluminium casting and CNC cutting, ultimately bringing this body of work to life.
This is the artist’s first international solo show.
Tim Meakins is an Artist and Designer based in Perth, Western Australia. Working across sculpture, painting, print, animation and publishing, he employs a visual grammar drawn from the history (and present) of computer graphics/operating systems and cartoons to create intensely energetic propositions around the evermutating forms, limits, plasticity, optical register and possibilities of digital and
analogue states-of-being. Through processes of digital prototyping and industrial fabrication, he explores the human connection and physicality, examining how far the body can be pushed, stretched, and resculpted. These creative outcomes often appear as cartoonish manifestations of strength and power;
bright characters in demonstrative poses, flexing and lifting heavy objects whilst referencing an array of cultural tropes, from remixed folklore and worldbuilding to fantasy and gym culture.
